I was quite surprised to see iPhone/iTouch integration on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. When I plugged my iPhone, Ubuntu first popped a dialog asking me to import photos (that is normal) as soon as I clicked OK, it popped another dialog saying that “You have just inserted a digital audio player”. I opened it with RhythmBox (default music player that comes with Ubuntu)and I was shocked to see Rhythmbox detecting and playing my iPhone’s Music(just like you’d see in iTunes including playlists, albums and so on). You can copy the music stored on your iPhone to your desktop directly by dragging it from Rhythmbox.
Afterthat I googled it and found that the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS supports iPhone/iTouch playback. This works via libiphone, combined with iFuse. iFuse is a FUSE file system driver that connects to your iPod Touch/iPhone through libiphone, using Apple’s native AFC protocol. And guess what? You don’t need to jailbreak your iPhone/iTouch (but I’d recommend you to jailbreak if you want to come out from Apple’s non-sense policies and standards :P).
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS also lets you to sync your iPhone/iTouch (just like you do in Windows and MAC with iTunes) through RhythmBox. (I’ll be posting separate article to cover Ubuntu syncing).
Ubuntu has already gained so much attention for being user-friendly and its versatile features and now offering iPhone/iPod touch support only makes it even more user-friendly.
